Life

I'm on a pretty ugly downswing here. I am starting to lose confidence in my game and life choices. I've always been extremely confident that I am an intelligent person; particularly when it comes to problem solving and gaming I feel there is nearly no intellectual barrier I can't overcome. But lately I constantly feel like I am being outsmarted by the regulars in the game. My ego is involved and it is dwindling. Sometimes I wonder if my mind is wasted on poker. I am no doubt a lazy man. Poker should be a perfect fit for my personality when you look at everything on paper. I might just be too emotional about the game to play it at a higher level. I guess I'm just confused about a variety of issues. All I do know is I am on an ugly downswing here.

HH

January has been the wildest month of my young poker career. I'd guess around 6 of my 10 biggest one day losses/gains have happened in the past three weeks. It's not healthy, but I know I can crush the games if things stay pace. Fun call down:

13 Questions

Gamblers Anonymous offers the following questions to anyone who may have a gambling problem. These questions are provided to help the individual decide if he or she is a compulsive gambler and wants to stop gambling. I have gone ahead and provided a translation for all you poker degens out there.

1. Did you ever lose time from work or school due to gambling? Have you ever skipped class to play the Sundays?
2. Did gambling affect your reputation?
Have people just given up on stealing your big blind?
3. Have you ever felt remorse after gambling? Have you ever bluffed off stacks to a calling station?
4. After losing did you feel you must return as soon as possible and win back your losses? Have you ever chased losses?
5. After a win did you have a strong urge to return and win more?
After a big score have you ever just let it ride?
6. Did you often gamble until your last dollar was gone? Have you ever been bust?
7. Did you ever borrow to finance your gambling? Have you ever been backed?
8. Have you ever sold anything to finance gambling? Have you ever used eBay to restart your full tilt roll?
9. Were you reluctant to use "gambling money" for normal expenditures?
Did you not buy your mother a Christmas present so you could play donkaments?
10. Did gambling make you careless of the welfare of yourself or your family? Have you ever played poker in a shady home game?
11. Did you ever gamble longer than you had planned? Have you ever missed your flight because you were playing online poker in the airport?
12. Did gambling cause you to have difficulty in sleeping? Having nightmares about getting check raised?
13. Did you ever have an urge to celebrate any good fortune by a few hours of gambling? Ever find a 100 dollar chip on the casino floor and head directly to the roulette wheel?

Most compulsive gamblers will answer yes to at least seven of these questions.

Blog Post

I'm not exactly sure of the cause, but as of the the past two weeks I've gradually slipped back into degeneracy. My hair is greasy, I can't fall asleep before 5am, I'm logging a ton of hours, and I've spent less than 12 minutes in the sunlight this year. My hunch is that I want to come out of the gates sprinting in 2009. I was born a raised, just as most professional poker players, with an unhealthy amount of competitive spirit. I still feel like the low man on the totem when I compare myself to my gambling peers. It sucks. No two ways about it. I am fortunate however that I still enjoy the game and look forward to nearly every session.

HHs

I really feel on top of my game lately. I played this guy hu 25 50 cap a bit this evening and I feel these two hands sum up my above the rim vision:

IHaveAStron posts the small blind of $25
gamblegambel posts the big blind of $50
*** HOLE CARDS ***
Dealt to gamblegambel [Jd Kc]
IHaveAStron raises to $100

*** FLOP *** [9d 4d Qd]
gamblegambel checks
IHaveAStron bets $100 I thought for a bit about check raising this bet. Honestly if I had the Kd or the Tc I would have, but I felt my hand had just a tad more value in calling than check raising and getting in 1400 into a 300 dollar pot.
gamblegambel calls $100
*** TURN *** [9d 4d Qd] [7h]
gamblegambel checks I like to lead these turns sometimes, but the texture wasn't quite right.
IHaveAStrong checks
*** RIVER *** [9d 4d Qd 7h] [Js]
gamblegambel has 15 seconds left to act I was thinking of betting for value here, but his line looks like a gutty/diamond/over. There just seemed more value in inducing the bluff.

A Look Back

I tallied up the numbers last night and 2008 turned out to be my most profitable year yet as a pro gambler; beating out 2006 by a few thousand. It's always good to look back and figure out where one's success stems from.

Notable items that greatly affected 2008:
  • a ton of hours in the first few months helped kick things off
  • 40% short stacking 40% cap 10% 6max/hu 100bb and a few tournaments
  • I don't feel like it was a particularly lucky year
  • the gf seemed to lessen the hours and steady the profits
  • a moderate amount of exercise kept the body in decent shape
  • finding good new music for the nye party and the excitement of friends coming into town along with the holidays and partying led to some really positive stress to end the year
  • 86% of my profits came in the last two and first two months (63% in 2006; random avg ought to be 33%)
