NYE Music

As always I have been devoting much of my time to browsing music blogs and getting jams for my new years party this year. Here are a few tracks that you may have not heard yet this year that I feel are a must if you are looking to get the party started:

Robyn - Indestructible (A-Trak Club Mix)

Girl Talk - Oh No

Lil Wayne - Swag Surfin

Rihanna - Only Girl (Mr. Larsson Dubstep Remix)

Eminem feat Rihanna - Love the way you lie (Sick boy remix)

By the way I am only one vote out of first place in the high stakes omaha player of the year race. Feel free to vote if you want to see me win - could make for some awesome super fun game time prizes wink wink.

I am not much of a panderer, but I may never have a year like this again for the rest of my poker career and it would mean a ton if I won high stakes omaha player of the year. If you have some spare time it would mean a ton if you could vote for me here:

I really liked this hand today. There is a lot going on for some simple action.

$5000.00 USD PL Omaha - Friday, December 10, 12:15:34 ET 2010

Seat 6: electra ( $2222.00 USD )

Far Away Boy raises [$112.50 USD]
gamblegambel calls [$112.50 USD] I am not the biggest fan of flatting these hands to half pot opens, but I think he is pretty weak, so I ain't folding here.
cheap c.heap folds
electra calls [$62.50 USD]
** Dealing Flop ** [ 2s, Js, Ts ]
electra checks
Far Away Boy bets [$150.00 USD] I think in general people cbet these flops too much, plus I have decent equity against all none made flush hands. With the cards I have it is super unlikely he is drawing to straight too besides maybe an AKxx.
gamblegambel calls [$150.00 USD]
electra folds
** Dealing Turn ** [ As ]
Far Away Boy bets [$300.00 USD] Interesting turn here. It changes things a lot since he couldnt have flopped the nut flush and wasnt bluffing the magic card. It is pretty rare here to be betting a set for value since the big straight just got made and it just got tougher to have a flush with four spades out. Because these sort of hands slow down it makes much more sense for me to be flatting this bet than raising with flushies.
gamblegambel calls [$300.00 USD]
** Dealing River ** [ 3c ]
Far Away Boy checks
gamblegambel bets [$512.00 USD] Perfectly balanced and sized. The only way he could be expoiting this line is if he was on the 2618th level; like taking candy from a baby.
Far Away Boy folds
gamblegambel wins $1260.50 USD from main pot

The EV of Running a Red Light

It kind of really pisses me off when I am driving home at 2am and I am sitting at a traffic light for 2 minutes when I can clearly see there isn't a car within three thousand feet. I usually end up just running the light, but I am kind of curious if it is a plus EV play. Besides a few minor intangibles, I believe the two factors to consider here is time lost/gained and money. For arguments sake I will not factor in the fun factor of running the light and the stress of talking to a police officer.

Option A - Obeying the law

I would guess the average time spent at an intersection at an uncensored traffic light at 2am on surface streets is around 40 seconds. I feel its safe to assume there is almost no opportunity cost of money you would be earning if you were home.

Option B - Running the light

Assuming you take a good 5 seconds to scan around and see no cars around, I'd say there is around a 1:300 chance of getting pulled over for running the light. Assumably one would be sober, not have any warrants, nothing illegal in the car etc... so the only money lost would be the ticket fine. My guess is 100 dollars. I would also guess it takes on average 12 minutes to get issued a ticket. Presumably there is also inflated insurance costs for getting lots of tickets. I'd set a value of around another 150 dollars in insurance premium hikes for getting caught once. So a little math:

12 minutes/300 + 5 second scan = 7.4 seconds lost
$(100+150)/300 = 71 cents in fines

So after some simple arithmetic it seems to come out that if you value 32.6 seconds of your late evening life more than 71 cents, you are a fish for waiting for the light to turn green.

Checking It Twice

I check PTR a couple times a day. I believe I am supposed to be top hat, but it doesn't seem to be updating the past few days for my page.

Funny story, I went out last weekend to this bar with a good friend of mine. We had a good amount to drink and the dance floor was getting pretty wild. There were these two girls who were dancing with each other right up front and some dude was all up in their face filming it with his phone and encouraging them to kiss etc. It had an obnoxiously bright light and everything. I approached and told him he was out of line and he shrugged me off. In my drunken state I went ahead and grabbed the phone out of his hand and tossed it across the bar. It was sorta hero epic.

P.S. He was black and I am lucky I suffered no bodily harm, he was super pissed.

Making the List

Gamblegambel is currently 47 on the list of most winning online players according to table ratings all time; pretty cool. I have been playing about 10 hours a week of poker and 40 hours a week of Starcraft. Some thoughts why great Starcraft players make great poker players:

You Have to Stay Aggressive: There is a big advantage to being the first person to attack. It gives you more ways to win and lets you dictate the game flow. Those who are passive/turtles usually fail.

It's all about countering: Almost every play out there is exploitable. You need to know how to counter it properly and do the recon necessary to make a good guess what your opponent is doing. Information is king.

It takes a fire in your belly: You have to love it, dream about it, always want to play. As soon as you finish a game you have to want to play another. It takes a pretty sick competitive spirit to be wildly successful.

Replays, Research, History: All the best players look back to see why things did or didn't work. Sometimes you have to really review plays to know what makes them successful and what you can tweak to make it better.

Pattern Recognition: People tend to be creatures of habit. Once you really immerse yourself in the game you will develop a sixth sense for what is about to happen next and be able to predict plays before they happen and have the trap set waiting.

Some Stuff

I am loving Starcraft II.

It seems like everyone on is a Christian and everyone on OKcupid is an atheist.

I had my first outing with my "little" brother last Sunday and we went on a hike and saw a play at his church (I was the only white guy of the 200 person audience). It went really well.

I watch a good amount of poker and play a little.

Gambling on the golf course is the sweet to the salty of playing games on my computer at home.

My nearly all colts fantasy team has left me with a 2-4 record and somehow my rag tag assembly is a favorite to win on the bye week by yahoo's projected points.

I have blisters on both my thumbs from hitting 160 balls with my driver today. Two balls went over the back fence at the driving range, but I'm not sure how far they went. I'd guess 263. Shouldn't the net be further back?

The kickball team I am on hasn't lost a game [besides one forfeit] and will likely go to the playoffs in a few weeks.

The Decatur beer festival is always in my top 10 favorite days of the year.

Friday Lights Night

OK; I had some drinks and did some stuff.

Saturday, October 9, 2010

I have been playing a lot of Starcraft II lately.

I recently signed up for this dating website and I was getting lots of responses and I was emailing back and forth with several ladies, but I had left out my profession. I went ahead and fixed it so my profile says I am a professional poker player and I haven't heard back from a lady since. I am pretty much convinced it is one of the worst jobs ever for meeting women.

I am getting pretty good at Starcarft II.

D.C. was great.

Our founding fathers knew what there were doing.

A.C. was gamblicious.

I spazzed out on day 2 with Ks4s on 3c7s9s for 60bb (lost to As3s).

N.Y.C. was fab

Fun city and even funner friends.

During the trip my computer died, which is a close second to one of the things I despise most in this world behind moving. It has been a pain in my rump to get windows up and running as I like it to play the poker cards.

The company of top notch friends is priceless.

My high water mark for the year continues to rise with each new day.

My dating life is pretty bland. I feel like I need to be more charming. How is charm even acquired? I feel like my energy is constantly directed at [nearly] unobtainable love. I am slow to let go of the past.

My dog is better than your dog.

Fantasy football is kinda fun.

I flew home first class (it was my first time). I tried to evaluate the worth:

Getting on and off the plane first: $11
The free lunch/dessert: $18
Hot towel: $1
The two mixed drinks: $16
The legroom/comfy chair: $65

Overall extra value over economy on 2 hour flight: ~$111

I believe it was around $230 dollars more for a one way flight home bought 5 days beforehand. Not the best value in the pampering store, but worth it once in a while if you have money to burn.

The survival trip to the outer banks was a bit of a bust. We rented this bare bones cabin on this island that is a national forest. The beach was empty and quite pretty, but our crabbing and surf fishing efforts were rather fruitless. We never caught anything worth eating and went three days with just bananas and rice. The last day before we left we rented a boat, made mojitos, drank beer, and had a blast cruising around the sound with good friends.

I am now in DC staying with boomboom. It is nice to be back in a real city. I played the wcoop 500+30 thing this Sunday. Real interesting scratch off ticket that lasted 6 hours before I lost a coin flip. In a few days we will be driving up to Borgata for the WPT event; should be a nice change of pace. I am a bit homesick and look forward to eventually getting home and working on my golf game and the game of love. Hopefully there will be time for a visit to the lovely nyc before this trip draws to a close.

I am pretty obsessed with PTR these days. I do at least 25 searches a day when I play and I check my ranking pretty regularly. When I am playing poker sessions I refresh my holdem manager about every 3 minutes to see my profits. It is a bit OCD. I have only been doing about 15 hour weeks the past few months, but my wrist is still hurting a bit. I have two camping trips planned for this weekend and the next one. A mountain bike expedition this Friday and then a survival like fishing+rice trip to follow. Should be fun. Hopefully I will be able to fit a Borgata/NYC trip in before the month draws to a close. I am at my high water mark for the year/life and it feels nice to be running above expected.

I had my best day ever in poker yesterday and it feels great.

Tuesday, August 24, 2010

When a video game becomes too easy and boring you do things to spice it up. You start at a higher level with less lives or whatever to make it challenging. Life is the same way. When things like money etc come too easily, you do things to spice it up. Try making a living while walking on your hands or making friends with a speech impediment. It's just a fact.

Sometimes failing at online dating feels like getting rejected by 10,000 women at once. Some enjoy a nightcap to end the day, but I enjoy 5. Part of me thinks I may be developing a problem and the other part feels like this is the only way to enjoy life.

Saturday, August 21, 2010

So I had my interview today with the big brother foundation. I was recently nudged into volunteering there this week by a close friend. Hopefully the fact that I gamble for a living and have over 7 drinks a week won't inhibit me from being a positive influence in a young person's life. I feel like I could give some solid advice and be a really good mentor. I suspect being involved with this organization will be a win win situation. The past few days have been profitable on the poker tables. I have been thinking a lot about new years eve this week. It is my favorite holiday.

While I was showering this afternoon I felt a small bump on the side of my chest. For some reason the first thing that entered my mind was that I have cancer. The thoughts that immediately followed were disheartening. One would like to think given the unexpected news that your existence is greatly compromised that the proceeding mental images would be humbling and reflective.
I think it is just a bug bite.

Tuesday, August 3, 2010

My current obsession is Monopoly. You know things are reaching a high level when you think about it all day and dream about it all night. The past two weeks we have had a few games for money. It is unfortunate that it has a bit of a bad reputation, because with a few adjustments to the rules it can be an excellent board game and super exciting to gamble on. Here are some house rules we play by:

Every property costs double: We do this because the standard setup for the game has a thoughtless buy buy buy formula. With this you have to be more selective with your money and more things go to auction; makes the game more about resource management.

Unsold property goes to silent auction: Most people don't realize that properties that aren't bought are supposed to be auctioned off. Our twist is we do a silent auction. Things tend to go for their true value. Accessing this untold worth is a huge skill.

Railroad warps: If you own more than one railroad you can warp between the ones you own. This provides some more mobility and makes being a railroad tycoon a real threat.

Creative trading: We allow immunity, profit sharing, short and long term passes etc. It's the name of the game, sorta.

Free parking: We put just the tax and jail money in free parking. It doesn't get too out of hand, but gives the guy in last place some hope. a few other tiny rules...

Sometimes I get this weird anxiety over the smallest tasks. I want to go to nyc, but I have trouble just buying the ticket online. I have to pay my real estate tax, but it takes me weeks just to write the check. I wait til I am out of clothes to do laundry and there are no more cups and plates to run the dishwasher. I can't distinguish procrastination from distaste from apprehension.

Homestead Adjustments

I got in the elevator when I got home and it was eerily quiet and I couldn't figure it out. Then it hit me. Every elevator in Vegas blasts club music so there is this wild contrast in my condo elevator of utter silence.

Trying to Remember the Past Month

The drive out to Vegas was leisurely. Having a back seat and legroom on a five thousand mile road trip is overrated. It was great to see Matt of St. Louis. In Phoenix we took a little more time and alongside Sterling we had a camping adventure. Drinking under the stars is one of the better spices of life. Little Toph is also a trip.

The condo at Palms Place was pretty ballin. There wasn't too much room for private space, but we were practically the top floor and had a corner unit with a view of the strip. Early on I got food poisoning. The following 30 hours I proceeded to vomit with Old Faithful-esque predictability and force. It took me about 5 days to get out of bed and play poker again. The highlights of non-poker activities included two epic Catan comeback wins, a lot of time in various pools, and some super fun games of horse (in basketball fashion) played on the putting green in the backyard of the estate of masters. I did quite well on prop bets. Back in the poker world I proceeded to go 0/5 in WSOP events [including an uneventful main] and lost a 10k flip in my one shot at 50/100/200 PLO. I did however win 14k in craps and we got nearly 10k in comps from it. Manny (our casino host) got us whatever we wanted basically, free rooms, free ballin dinners, free bottles in the club etc. After all was said and done, I was basically even on the trip going into the last stand, which I wasn't even planning on playing the day before it started.

In the Venetian 5k I managed to double up in the first 20 minutes in a 500bb chip pot. A young kid raised I 3bet AK, bb calls and the young kid 4bet and I just called. He fired three barrels on a AJxxx board and I called his river all in and he showed JT. The next few days were a blur of winning and losing a lot of pots, my stack was all over the map. In the biggest pot on day 3 I got it in with KK vs JJ on a 854 two heart flop board and he rivered a J. Instead of being a solid 2nd in chips with three tables left I was left real short. I ran real hot on all my allins and than ran a big bluff check calling flop and check raising turn to jam river on A9492 three diamond board to get called by AK. Again I got short and ran hot on allins to make final table with decent stack. The most interesting hand from the final table I 3bet a CO steal with 57s in sb and called the Russian's 4bet. Flop came 6d4d24d (I had spades) and I check jammed his cbet to win a real big pot. I busted in 3rd A8o<66 for $131,983; my biggest tournament score to date.

Nick and I drove the 2000 miles home in 26 hours straight.

Vegas Update

I busted day 2 of the 3k in some standard sort of spots with a final exit losing a flip just short of the money. I played some craps last night and after the riffraff went to bed and we moved location to the Palms we crushed and I finished up over 4k. I played some PLO tonight and despite chopping a 7k pot with As6sQT v 88xx on Js9s8s after running it twice I profited 1615 on the session. I might take time off til the main event after the 4th...

Vegas Is Killing Me

Normally I am a pretty healthy guy. I eat pretty well and exercise regularly and almost never get sick. Since being in Vegas the past 4 days I have vomited 27 times, 2 bloody noses, fainted once bruising my head and an unexplainable gash on my torso.

Sunday, June 20, 2010

In 1995 a man in Portland, Oregon lost a bet and had to lay down on the ground and put his mouth around the exhaust pipe of his Plymouth Fury. As friends cheered him on, he inhaled for slightly over 5 minutes until his head split wide open.

2000 Miles in the S2000

Leg one of the trip resulted in visiting the heartland of America. We (blueflare and I) stopped by the gateway to the west to see a good friend, catch the soccer game and play carny games with the locals. People are fat and dumb. I had a blast and can't wait to get to Vegas to congratulate my good friend J on winning his first bracelet. Super awesome.

Thursday, June 10, 2010

I am excited to be leaving for Vegas tomorrow. Good luck to J, who is in good shape to win a bracelet and 800k today. Soon I will be able to have a break from attempts to align my lifestyle with the majority of others and relish in the joys of high stakes gambling...

After twenty seven years the brain seem to be strictly hardwired and seemingly set in stone in all fundamental areas as seen fit by some of your own accord, some genetics and some environment. And from a rather basic perspective its sole function is to translate all the impulses received from the world. The odds are quite unlikely I will wake up tomorrow and think gambling is evil or believe in a god or vote republican. It is quite fascinating the variety of the rainbow that is the array of programed minds out there. Some people see colors when they listen to music. Some people think snipping people from their trunk is the answer. At this point in life it seems like the highest pleasures are gained from appreciating the spectrum and just finding people with circuits that are wired in a similar fashion to yours.

I Do Not Want This

So I drove my scooter home this evening in Friday night Atlanta traffic in the rain after half a bottle of wine, four beers, and a cocktail. I probably should have died, but I guess it wasn't my time. I should probably give my poker passwords to someone so if I do die a crap load of money doesn't go wasted/ungambled. Drinking with friends is my favorite thing to do when not playing poker. I also love doing what everyone doesn't expect me to do. Blogging is fun. Vegas is hot. Women are hard/easy. I am in left field. I want to know everything. I want to be everywhere. I want to fuck everyone in the world. I want to do something that matters.

An early lesson on the consequences of having an unbalanced bluffing range: The Boy Who Cried Wolf. Think about it.

Sunday, May 23, 2010

I went to four parties in the past two days. I am vaguely associated with a few social circles, but I don't really feel accepted by any. I have a good amount of friends, but don't feel particularly close to any individuals. I continually get panic attacks in social settings despite being invited and inebriated. If it weren't for an over loving Italian mother and a dog that needs me to feed it I would have very little reason to keep living. It may just be the depressing affects of alcohol, but I don't really care about much of anything these days. I am pretty bored with my existence. Games are the only thing I enjoy. I wonder if I can blame my exuberant amount of time on my laptop for my slacking real life skills. I feel like giving up on women and friends and family. I may be spherical in appearance and seem to orbit the sun, but I am no planet.

Snooze x11

I now get .05% interest on my checking account. I am a losing online tournament player. I would set the over under for the next time I kiss a woman at 209 days. The crank for my passenger window broke. I spend most of my free time golfing by myself or reading at the pool. I think my dog is well aware that he is cooler than I am; he is still my best friend. When I was growing up my father used to be very discrete about showing any cash while in public; that apple fell far from the tree. People think I am naturally good at many things, but what they cease to realize is I have an insane amount of free time, which allows for ample practice. How else would one get to Carnegie Hall. I am growing tired of my wardrobe. My days are brightened by unnecessarily long walks and the endless possibilities for the future.

Not Writing

I was going to write about how my life has been in idle lately, but it is still sort of a roller coaster. I was going to write about things I wanted to do with my spare time, but the list was short. I was going to write about my thoughts on dating and marriage, but they're not insightful. I was going to write about what I expect for the WSOP this year, but I don't like to speculate. I was going to write about my deepest inner thoughts, but I was afraid what might come up.

Megaman Equip with...

So I picked up a new concept in poker tonight that I had yet to ever stumble upon before. It comes in handy in situations where you are facing a river bet from an opponent with a bluff catcher. In very close decisions in unlikely spots often the difference maker in the hand can be having blockers for your opponents likely hands that would have been turned into bluffs. For example in omaha if you had a warp+over pair on a paired board and the river brought three of a kind and your opponent just called a turn bet and made a big river bet, it is harder for him to have a wrap turned bluff (since you have most of those cards) and would weigh his hand more towards the quads or aces. Just something to chew on...

Super Fun Game Time Conclusion

So apparently cutting back on drinking is a healthier way of life. I called for the results and they said it was 1.3. Congrats to Tyler who won after guessing it correctly right on the head. If you want you can email me your contact info so I can send you the winnings after I cash later this July. Thanks for playing everyone and better luck next time...

P.S. If you are a PTR nut like me, let me know and I will send you a premium beta invite - I have five.

Super Fun Game Time

When I went to the doctor earlier this year my bilirubin levels were at 2.2H mg/dL where the recommended healthy levels were 0.2-1.2.

Game: Guess what my lab results will be from my doctor visit on Friday having severely cut down on my drinking this past month. You're guess is as good as mine...

Rules: One guess per lifetime to be left in the comments section and rounded to the nearest tenth decimal point. Game will end whenever the results come in the mail (should be a day or two).

Prize: .1% of my main event action this year at the WSOP

Last Day

Well, I am going to to doctor this morning to get some blood work done. I have a gut feeling that my lab results could make for an excellent super fun game time. Yesterday was a bit of a disaster. I made it to the second round of the FTOPs PLO event, but my second table didn't pop up and I blinded off and then gambled away a lot of money in the cash games. Full Tilt was nice enough to send back my tournament buy in. Unfortunately that only recovered about 1% of my loses for the day.

Out of drinks
5760 minutes left

Here is how every other day has gone these past two weeks:

Play golf with my friends and win 100 dollars in prop bets. My skills in comparison to my competitive peers:

Off the tee box: 3
Putting: 2
Chipping/Pitching: 5
Composure: 1
Clutch: 9

I make all my money on the last two holes.

Come home and play some poker and crush the cash games.

Play an FTOPs event and go out on a dumbass hand and go to bed slightly tilted.

Something that has really been annoying me lately in poker is when you ask for advice on a decision you made and people reply with, "I think that is profitable, but probably not optimal." The whole concept that a decision is profitable in a vacuum is pointless. To think of it at an extreme, if one was to open shove all in on the button for 200bb with AA it would surely be a profitably play, but everyone in the poker world knows that is a terrible play in almost any circumstance. If a play isn't optimal there should never be a positive adjective attached to it. If there is a way to play the hand that isn't how one would make the most money, who the hell wants to hear about it?

I played my worst golf of the season today, but thanks to a clutch 18th hole when the big skins mattered I pulled a profit of 200 in prop bets. I have been getting so lucky in everything I touch these days people should be paying me to poop in their toilet.

I played golf today at Alfred Tup Holmes. Despite never having officially shot below 100 on a full round of 18, I shot a career low 89 today. Highlights include teeing off my driver on a par 4 267 yard hole and sticking it 6 feet from the pin (just missed the eagle putt). Was still good enough for a 30 dollar prop and 100 in props for the round.

What's the Difference

So Pennsylvania recently reneged on their ruling that poker was more of a skill game than luck. It's kind of hard to quantify just exactly how much skill and luck any risk venture has, so I'd thought I would draw on some hard data. Here are the graphs of the biggest fortune five hundred companies performances over the past three years as compared to the most successful players on table ratings for the past two years (you can see the company name in the task bar if you place the mouse over the graph):
