Monopoly

My current obsession is Monopoly. You know things are reaching a high level when you think about it all day and dream about it all night. The past two weeks we have had a few games for money. It is unfortunate that it has a bit of a bad reputation, because with a few adjustments to the rules it can be an excellent board game and super exciting to gamble on. Here are some house rules we play by:

Every property costs double: We do this because the standard setup for the game has a thoughtless buy buy buy formula. With this you have to be more selective with your money and more things go to auction; makes the game more about resource management.

Unsold property goes to silent auction: Most people don't realize that properties that aren't bought are supposed to be auctioned off. Our twist is we do a silent auction. Things tend to go for their true value. Accessing this untold worth is a huge skill.

Railroad warps: If you own more than one railroad you can warp between the ones you own. This provides some more mobility and makes being a railroad tycoon a real threat.

Creative trading: We allow immunity, profit sharing, short and long term passes etc. It's the name of the game, sorta.

Free parking: We put just the tax and jail money in free parking. It doesn't get too out of hand, but gives the guy in last place some hope.

...plus a few other tiny rules...

"...plus a few other tiny rules..." This sounds like you're hiding something very interesting, lol. Cool game you've turned this into, sir!

There's an app for that... and it is fun too!

i always thought the railroads were the best value on the board - this rule change seems to make them incredibly powerful. although with the double value of properties, it would take 16 rent charges for you to break even on them owning 1 or 2, 12 rent charges to break even at 3, and 8 at 4.

either way these are awesome changes.

Not sure what Triumph is thinking, railroads w/o warps are total stinkers.

wat; assuming i'm not getting leveled, and with the caveat that i haven't played monopoly in a while, nor have i played it at a high level, nor have i googled optimal monopoly gameplay - a single railroad is not very good, but two, while not increasing the rent:cost to buy ratio, doubles the frequency of rent collecting. let's not forget the number of chance cards (IIRC, at least 2) that send people to the nearest railroad and charge double, as well as the card that makes people go to reading railroad.

railroads should also have reasonably high trade value because having 3 is more valuable than having 2.

i suspect with much more exotic trading rules that would enable people to profit share, and the existence of free parking increasing the amount of money in the game and thus increasing the ease of building houses and hotels, the EV of the railroads goes down because ldo monopolies are more valuable.

While you highlight plenty of nice things about railroads, they don't compare to traditional real estate because you can't build houses and hotels on them. Losing 200 bones late in the game is not much of a threat to opponents.

from one grinder to another, 90 day self exclusion, cash-out, never deposit again. heaters don't last forever mang.
